Sacramento witnessed a surge of athletic prowess as around 3,000 participants swam, cycled, and ran their way through Ironman California. This endurance fest drew athletes and enthusiasts from every state and multiple countries, marking it as a major event in the sacramento capital's calendar. According to an ABC10 report, the event spanned a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, followed by a 26.2-mile run.
Amid the athletes, Liss Rametta emerged victorious in the women's division with a notable finish time of 9 hours and 15 minutes, having to push hard, especially towards the end. As she triumphed in the grueling contest, Kitaro Takesue also achieved a personal milestone, completing the race in 11 hours and 25 minutes, just a day before his 40th birthday. Takesue shared with ABC10 the demanding routine of training amidst full-time work and family commitments. "A lot of hard work and a lot of early mornings," he said, reflecting on the journey that started with swimming during the pandemic.
The zeal of fans and families was palpable as they cheered for the participants across Sacramento. The racers expressed their gratitude for the support that made their efforts possible. "We're so lucky we get to do this, and we can't do this without the people around us," Victoria Fang told CBS13, after finishing first in the swim and bike ride for her age group. This outpouring of human spirit also doubled as an opportunity for those visiting to explore the city's culinary and cultural hotspots.
Beyond the personal triumphs, Ironman California has injected a significant economic boost totaling more than $15 million, according to Dave Eadie, chief sports entertainment officer for Visit Sacramento. The event, buoyed by positive weather this year, has clearly set to create a symbiotic relationship with the city's economy, particularly aiding the recovery of downtown businesses impacted by the increase of remote work. Mike Testa, President and CEO of Visit Sacramento, indicated to CBS13 that such events, when executed well, can substantially boost the local economy and attract even more event organizers to the area. "When you do an event of this caliber and you do it well, it attracts other event organizers, so we've certainly seen that in Sacramento," said Testa.
The completion of Ironman California marks yet another successful endurance event. Each participant, regardless of the time taken to cross the finish line, has rightfully cemented their status as an Ironman, proving that the dedication and hard work leading up to this moment were indeed worth the effort. The City of Sacramento's warm embrace of this event also reflects its growing status as a hub for major athletic and cultural occasions, promising substantial benefits for local industries and a richer tapestry of experiences for residents and visitors alike.
