New details emerged as the Sacramento Police Department has released video footage of a police shooting incident from September 14. The video, captured from surveillance cameras and officers' body-worn cameras, provide a clearer picture of the moments leading up to, and following the shooting near Bell Avenue and Beloit Drive.
As per the footage shared by KCRA, two patrol officers spotted a blue Ford Explorer with expired registration. The sequence of events quickly escalated when the driver of the vehicle abruptly parked and proceeded to hastily exit the vehicle. Officers decided to investigate further, eventually leading them to attempt to locate the driver after watching him "get out of the car and go this way," as one officer narrated in the footage. This ultimately resulted in the need for officers to thoroughly search the area.
Several minutes into the search, officers found the suspect lying on top of a nearby RV. Body camera footage published by Fox40 reveals an officer drawing his firearm and ordering the man to "come down." Tension escalated when, instead of complying, the suspect ran and jumped from the RV's roof, leading to a chase that concluded with a confrontation on the ground. During the struggle to detain the man, an officer fired their weapon, resulting in a non-lethal graze to the man's head.
After officers provided immediate medical care, the suspect was transported to a local hospital and subsequently discharged. "Alright brother man, you're at gunpoint, I need you to come down," an officer's command echoes chillingly in the video footage, highlighting the fraught moments before the chase. The suspect was later booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of resisting arrest, as well as a felony no-bail warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to reports from both KCRA and Fox40.
The release of this video comes at a time when police conduct and use of force remain under heavy scrutiny. Sacramento Police Department's transparency in releasing the videos aims to provide context around their actions while continuing to inform the public on incidents involving law enforcement in their community.
