To address the increase in cluster mailbox thefts in San Antonio, District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito has proposed a policy to improve security measures. The theft of mail from these collection points has resulted in residents losing personal correspondence and facing potential identity theft, causing concern in affected neighborhoods.
The proposed actions aim to mesh the expertise of various agencies to form a task force dedicated to this issue, as per the official announcement from Councilmember Gavito. "While mail delivery is a federal responsibility, these are our residents, and we want to take local action wherever possible," Gavito stated. In light of these concerns, the proposal also anticipates collaboration with CPS Energy's All Night Security Lighting program to aid homeowners associations (HOAs) in deterring criminal activities.
Gavito is not alone in her stride to protect the community's sense of security. Other councilmembers, including Melissa Cabello Havdra from District 6, Manny Pelaez of District 8, John Courage of District 9, and Marc Whyte of District 10, have signed in support of the proposal. This agreement indicates a city-wide recognition of the urgent need to address mailbox theft.
"By collaborating with communities, law enforcement, and local leaders, we seek to tackle and reduce mail theft," Gavito stated in the news release, highlighting the comprehensive approach of the initiative. "It’s essential to call attention to this issue and partner with law enforcement to hold accountable those criminals who disrupt our neighbors’ peace of mind and steal their belongings." With this multi-faceted strategy, the city council aims to reassess and strengthen the security of personal correspondence, regardless of how it is delivered.
