In an effort to address the pressing issue of celebratory gunfire in San Antonio, District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo and District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito have spearheaded a request for a public service campaign. The campaign's goal would be to highlight the dangers of such actions and the associated legal consequences. Acknowledging the unease within communities, Castillo stated, "Oftentimes at neighborhood meetings, community members mention that they feel unsafe in their own homes due to reckless celebratory gunfire." These remarks were provided in a statement obtained by the City of San Antonio official website.

As part of the initiative, residents are encouraged to "Call the Shots" by using the non-emergency line, 210-207-SAPD (7273), to report incidents of celebratory gunfire. This call to action is part of the broader safety messaging campaign that Councilmembers aim to circulate using existing media relationships and the Communications & Engagement team. "Our community's public safety is my number one priority, and we must take action to protect our community from the dangers of celebratory gunfire," Gavito added in the same press release.

The joint Council Consideration Request (CCR) has garnered additional backing from fellow councilmembers, including Melissa Cabello Havrda of District 6, John Courage of District 9, and Marc Whyte of District 10. Each has provided supporting signatures, framing this campaign as a step towards mitigating unsafe gun practices that have burgeoned within the city. District 9 Councilmember John Courage emphasized the significance of such educational campaigns by saying to the City of San Antonio, "It will take educational campaigns like this CCR in conjunction with our Voluntary Weapons Xchange, which is spearheaded by District 9, to positively impact the gun culture in San Antonio."

The Governance Committee of the City has been tasked with reviewing the CCR before determining its inclusion in a future Council meeting agenda. With the signatures in place and the call for action clear, San Antonio officials are moving towards promoting a safer environment for their constituents. This efforts spotlight the ongoing dialogues regarding public safety and the responsible use of firearms in urban communities.
