Providing a window into calls for service, arrests, and offense reports, according to the City of San Antonio official website, this initiative marks a stride towards transparency.
Apart from simplifying access to information, the dashboard offers a range of interactive features such as maps, graphs, tables and data filters that allow for personalized queries based on area, zip code, and the nature of police response; it also allows the public to spot patterns in police activities during different times, which can be particularly insightful during periods of high activity like rush hours or holidays, this way it not only helps individuals to stay informed but also aids in fostering a sense of security among the community. Detailing data spanning from January 1, to September 30, updates to include the previous month's data slated to be rolled out at each month's start, providing fresh insights regularly.
In a statement obtained by the city's news release, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus championed the project, saying, "This is the first step to greater access and transparency about the police response citywide or in the areas people are most concerned about, such as their places of business or residence." McManus believes the dashboard lays the groundwork for mutually beneficial collaboration and dialogue between the police department and the community it serves.
The implementation of this digital transparency effort is just the beginning, representing the first of three such dashboards; following suit will be those in conjunction with the San Antonio Fire Department and Good Neighbors Program, intending to extend the scope of available public information, the aim of these initiatives is to provide citizens with comprehensive data pertaining to the various facets of public safety in San Antonio, plans are in place to enhance the dashboard based on user feedback, and subsequent iterations may offer year-to-year comparisons to trace long-term trends.
