The event, taking place from 4:30 p.m. until the stroke of midnight, is a free cultural spectacle that opens its arms to the public, promising an array of traditional Indian dance, entertainment, food, and crafts. Anchored in respect for the city's diversity, DiwaliSA is a partnership between AnujaSA and the City of San Antonio, and its glow extends from the Hemisfair to the Arneson River Theatre.
In sync with the festival's theme of light triumphing over darkness, the night will shine bright with the illumination of candles and lamps, echoing the age-old traditions of Diwali. As stated by a City of San Antonio news release, the festival was born from the Sister-City Agreement with Chennai, India, signed in 2008, serving as a bridge between the communities. San Antonio's Mayor Ron Nirenberg highlights this cultural bridge, stating, "This event is a prime example of the comradery that exists through the City of San Antonio's alliance with Chennai, India as a Sister-City."
The steadfast Sister-City relationship between San Antonio and Chennai thrives, thanks to efforts from AnujaSA, a group that aims to nurture the bond between these two distinct metropolises. "Diwali SA is a celebration of the vibrant Indian culture, a testament to our shared heritage, and an invitation for all to experience the beauty of unity in diversity," Anuja SA President Kausi Subramaniam told San Antonio's official news portal. Additionally, the group champions a variety of exchanges across arts, medicine, education, and more.
Sherry Dowlatshahi, City of San Antonio Economic Development Department's Chief Protocol Officer, emphasized the importance of the festival as San Antonio's cultural cornerstone. She expressed, "The annual DiwaliSA is our most important cultural activity held locally celebrating our sister city relationship in India with Chennai and sharing the beautiful culture of India with our residents," according to the City's announcement. The event's success is attributed to partnerships, sponsors, and a committed team of volunteers who fuel this vibrant celebration of Indo-Texan friendship and solidarity. The November celebration promises a spectacle with the River Parade, a variety of vendors, fireworks, and more to encapsulate the spirit of Diwali and community joy.
