A light was cast on mental health as local authorities took a stand to encourage the community to pause and self-reflect momentarily. Aligning with Mental Illness Awareness Week, the County has instituted Check Your Mood Day, an initiative to bring awareness to emotional well-being, emphasizing depression screening. Falling today this year, residents had a chance to engage with this mindful exercise, as the San Diego County reported.

The initiative encouraged online self-assessment tools to help residents identify whether they were experiencing typical stress levels. While these aren't meant to replace medical diagnosis, they're instrumental in assisting individuals to monitor their mental health. Luke Bergmann, Ph.D., director of the County Behavioral Health Services, stated, as per a San Diego County press release, "Checking in on your mental health is just as important as getting your blood pressure checked or seeing your doctor for an annual physical."

Such initiatives become increasingly significant given the Department of Health and Human Services data indicating that one in five adults in the United States experiences mental illness annually. Yet, many people might not recognize their symptoms as a mental health issue or choose to struggle due to the stigma associated with these conditions silently.

To extend help to those facing mental health challenges, the County offers a 30-day Mental Wellness Practice. This free program focuses on daily activities such as developing a routine, cooking, or unplugging digital devices to promote mental well-being. Additionally, the San Diego Access and Crisis Line, accessible at 1-888-724-7240 or 988, provides around-the-clock support. Counselors are available to assist in over 200 languages. For further support and resources, individuals are directed to the Up2SD.org and OwnYourMindset.org websites, tailored for adults and youth seeking to reclaim their mental health.
