The City Council of San Antonio has recently given the green light for funding the design of a new Senior Center in District 2. Set to rise at 4911 Lord Rd, this center marks a significant development in providing for the needs of the district's aging population, as reported by the City's official website.
Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has prioritized this initiative since 2021, aiming to create a space not just for reflecting on contributions of the past but also for forging new connections and experiences among the senior community. "Seniors should be celebrated not just for what they’ve given and done in the past tense. They deserve to continue building new relationships, learning new things, and making new memories," McKee-Rodriguez stated, in sentiments captured during the announcement by the City of San Antonio.
In addition to the center, the funding will cover concept master planning for affordable senior housing and will include enhancements to Copernicus Park and Community Center. These efforts underscore the commitment to holistic improvements to senior living within the district. A community meeting held on June 27, demonstrated strong community engagement, with over 300 seniors participating to discuss and contribute to the vision for the new center.
"This action today is a pivotal step forward in securing the community space our seniors deserve,," McKee-Rodriguez told the City's news outlet. With the design phase expected to take between 12-18 months, the project is slated to be ready prior to the 2027 Bond program, positioning it well for various funding opportunities. The next phase will involve the selection of an architect for the facility and a follow-up community engagement session with the seniors of District 2.
