The City of Sandy Springs is preparing to host its 15th Annual Veterans Day Tribute this year, inviting the public to join in commemorating the dedication and service of U.S. military veterans. The event is slated for Monday, November 11, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. and will unfold in the Byers Theatre at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center. In keeping with the spirit of respect and remembrance, this gathering is free to all who wish to attend and pay their respects to those who have served the nation in uniform.
At the helm of the ceremony as Keynote Speaker is U.S. Marine Corps Colonel (Ret) John McDonough, also known for his tenure as Sandy Springs City Manager from 2006 to 2019, according to the official City of Sandy Springs website. The tribute will include patriotic music and reflections from city leaders like Mayor Rusty Paul, who will offer insights on the profound impact of military service, while businesses and residents of Sandy Springs and surrounding areas are strongly encouraged to take part and honor veterans from the various branches of the armed forces.
Following the tributes within Byers Theatre, attendees will be ushered just across the way to Veterans Park, where the dedication of two distinct but equally poignant art sculptures will take place. Ephemeral as it isn't, the first, a piece by artist Curtis Pittman titled "Be the Light," stands at an imposing 33 feet tall, with an internal light that aims to cast an unending luminance akin to a perpetual flame dedicated to service.
The second piece, "Three Generations" created by Atlanta's very own Kevin Chambers, strikes a different chord by capturing the weight of legacy and loss through a bronze representation of a family holding fast to the memory of their fallen service member. “The humanity captured in their expressions, filled with hope and reverence, creates a profoundly moving tribute,” as described on the City's website, at Veterans Park these sculptures will stand as testament and memorial for all who encounter them.
For those interested in crafting a more personal homage, the City offers an opportunity to purchase personalized pavers and benches through their website, with details available for those wishing to bestow a lasting mark of gratitude and remembrance. More information on the event, including how to be a part of this day of tribute, can be found on the City of Sandy Springs official Veterans Day page.
