Tragedy struck the Scottsdale community on Friday, October 11, when a local man was found dead within the natural expanse of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Scottsdale Police have confirmed the identity of the deceased as 57-year-old Howard E. Lentz, as detailed by FOX 10 Phoenix. Reported by family members as missing after he failed to return from a mountain bike ride, the search initiated led to the discovery of Lentz's body later in the evening.
Authorities were called to the case at about 5:30 p.m., only to uncover the grim scene approximately three and a half hours later. They found Lentz's body "off-trail far inside the preserve with the aid of drones, cell phone data, and an MCSO air unit," according to a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. Efforts to recover Lentz were supported by various responsive teams, including Scottsdale Fire, which assisted with the precarious extraction of his body from the rugged preserve terrain.
Initial assessments suggest that Lentz's untimely death might have been precipitated by a medical event or a mountain bike crash. "Scottsdale police detectives and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating his death," as reported by AZFamily.
