
Authorities are intensifying their search for a robbery suspect following an incident near the University of Tennessee's campus, per multiple reports. The suspect, described as either a white or Hispanic male armed with a handgun, demanded a 22-year-old woman’s money before fleeing with her purse, according to the victim's account to law enforcement.
Officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Cumberland Avenue approximately at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, WBIR reports. The University's Police Department has since urged the community to use caution and has advised to not directly approach the suspect, who was last observed heading toward Neyland Drive via 3rd Creek Greenway. The suspect was additionally noted to quickly have fled toward Neyland Drive on the Third Creek Greenway. People are instead encouraged to report any suspicious activity by contacting authorities.
As indicated in an emergency alert from the University of Tennessee Police Department, the suspect was wearing a ski mask and a black hoodie during the time of the robbery. WVLT's coverage of the event adds that he was last seen moving in the direction of Neyland Drive.
Despite efforts to canvas the area soon after the incident, Knoxville and University police have been unable to locate the suspect or the white sedan he initially approached the victim in. According to WATE's report, the investigation continues as officials gather more information.
