Concern is mounting as multiple agencies continue the urgent search for a 20-year-old man last seen swimming yesterday afternoon near Mickler's Landing. St. Johns County Fire Rescue initiated the search after the swimmer's family reported him missing at approximately 2:15 p.m., as originally reported by FirstCoastNews.
Despite efforts that stretched overnight, there has been no sign of the young man, who was last seen at 1:45 p.m. wearing black pants. Search teams including the Coast Guard, St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, and Fire Rescue personnel are systematically combing the area, asking residents to steer clear to ease their operation, as per details from ActionNewsJax. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is joining the search, planning to step up efforts as daylight breaks.
The community has become active in their own way, with people gathering to pray for the missing man, "All of a sudden, there’s just this overwhelming feeling that came over me to try and do something in prayer and so my heart just started breaking for these people and because I mean, if it was my child, I would want somebody to do that," shared Antonella and Robert Parker in a statement obtained by News4Jax. This incident comes at a time when the ocean's dangers have been put into stark perspective by two critical water rescues yesterday afternoon, as they happened in Ponte Vedra Beach and Hanna Park.
Authorities are reiterating calls made by the Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue Division, urging the public to avoid the water following a High Rip Current Risk warning issued by the National Weather Service for Duval County. The escalating ocean conditions have led to the closure of beaches in the southern parts of the county, where the rip currents are particularly severe. If anyone has any information regarding the missing swimmer, they are urged to call 911 immediately.
