The Plumas County Sheriff's Office has launched a search for Camila "Mila" Schweyer, a 16-year-old hiker who was last seen going for a hike with her dog in the Lakes Basin area and has not returned. According to ABC10, Schweyer's mother reported her missing around 6 p.m. on Sunday after the teenager did not return from her hike near the Elwell Lakes Lodge.
Despite a search that lasted through Sunday night, the Plumas County rescue teams could not locate the teenager. Schweyer is described as approximately 5 feet, 110 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. "She was last seen wearing a dark gray sweatshirt, black leggings, blue shoes and carrying a light blue backpack," the sheriff's office stated. Schweyer was also hiking with a small, Chihuahua-type dog, as reported by ABC10.
As reported by CBS News Sacramento, Monday morning saw an increase in search efforts with the California Highway Patrol helicopter returning to aid in the search, following a mutual aid request to the California Office of Emergency Services. Local officials continue to coordinate resources to locate Schweyer.
The Plumas County Sheriff's Office is urging anyone with information about the whereabouts of Schweyer to come forward. The public can contact the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office at 530-283-6300 with any potential leads in the ongoing search for the missing hiker.
