The Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) is currently seeking individuals to join the Families, Education, Preschool and Promise (FEPP) Levy Oversight Committee (LOC). This call for applicants is part of an effort to ensure that the FEPP levy, a significant educational investment funded by Seattle taxpayers, continues to operate with transparency and a focus on equity. Interested parties must submit their applications by the deadline of Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at 5:00 pm.

The FEPP levy, passed in November 2018, represents a $619 million-dollar commitment over seven years to enhance educational opportunities and bridge systemic gaps faced by Seattle's young scholars. The Oversight Committee, consisting of 17 members, plays a critical role in reviewing the levy's impact and advising DEEL on the allocation of funds. Those selected to serve on the committee will not only review investments but will also be expected to actively engage with the community and represent a broad array of perspectives.

During their tenure, LOC members will advise DEEL on how best to utilize unspent funds annually and may participate in site visits to see the impact of investments first-hand. As noted by DEEL, members join others in a collective, such as shown in a recent group photo from their retreat at the Mt. Baker Rowing & Sailing Center in 2024. These photographs reflect the collaborative spirit DEEL seeks to foster in shaping the future of Seattle's education.

With the LOC appointment extending through December 2025, members must be prepared to contribute five to 10 hours per month. DEEL is particularly seeking individuals from communities that experience educational inequities, including but not limited to people of color, immigrants, refugees, and queer & transgender individuals. Applicants who possess experience or a deep interest in early learning, health, K-12 academic achievement, cultural responsiveness, and postsecondary education are especially encouraged to apply.

To apply, individuals should visit the City’s Boards and Commissions website by November 5, 5:00 pm. The application process requires candidates to submit their resumes and demonstrate a commitment to racial equity, likely through previous volunteer or professional experiences. The ideal applicant will bring a passion for education and a readiness to contribute significantly to enhancing learning for all Seattle's students.
