The Washington State Patrol has announced the conclusion of a homicide investigation connected to human remains found in a Seattle encampment near the convergence of I-5 and I-90. A suspect, 57-year-old Steven Thanh Nguyen, who also resided at the encampment, has been charged with second-degree murder, court documents from the King County Superior Court reveal.
Investigators have identified the victim as 37-year-old Shannon Marie Caslin Reeder after the remains were examined by the King County Medical Examiner, this last sighting of Ms. Reeder was reported in November of 2023, and the last confirmed local sighting of Ms. Reeder was in November of 2023, Nguyen was apprehended on October 3 on an unrelated Department of Corrections warrant. CID detectives gathered evidence and conducted interviews, which indicated Nguyen's alleged involvement in the homicide, establishing that although Reeder had her own housing, she was known to frequently visit Nguyen's encampment.
The case took a significant turn after Nguyen's arrest when the subsequent investigation connected him with Reeder's death. Detectives methodically pieced together the chain of events leading to the tragic discovery in September. With the case now firmly in the hands of the King County Prosecutor’s Office, any further questions or requests for additional information will be directed there.
As the legal process moves forward, the King County Prosecutor's Office bears the responsibility of navigating the complexities of the judicial system to bring about justice in this case, the suspect, Mr. Nguyen was charged this Wednesday with the crime, and the community awaits the outcome as reported by the Washington State Patrol's final update on their investigation. The severity of the incident underlines the ongoing concerns about safety and vulnerability for those living in such transient conditions within the city.
