Seattle's Pier 58 is poised to get a little more playful come next spring. The City’s Office of the Waterfront & Civic Projects has been laboring to transform the area into an inviting space replete with a children's playground, plaza, and more. A gigantic jellyfish-shaped climbing tower stands as the playground's centerpiece, a concept born from the creative input of local parents and children.
In a recent Parkways Seattle report, it was revealed that the new playground design was influenced by the public's vision, as captured through extensive community engagement. The jellyfish-climbing tower and accompanying features emerged from a vision for a play area that's both fun and sculptural. "There could be fun and creative designs related to marine life," and "I like (the Washington Waters concept) because we know more about the land than the sea" were among the community-driven suggestions that shaped the final design.
The play area promises inclusivity with wheelchair navigable routes and play structures like magnetic bead panels tailored for accessibility. A transparency design principle allows parents and guardians to keep a watchful eye on the children at play while still enjoying views of Elliott Bay from the Park Promenade.
Pier 58's enhancements don't end at the playground. The Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects have been steadily working on the pier since 2022, replacing outdated timber piles with robust steel counterparts. The playground's diverse play elements were prefabricated offsite, delivered in piecemeal, and constructed in September, with focus now shifting to safety surfacing and permanent seating installations.
Adjacent to the pier, a new public restroom, slated to open in early 2025, is in the works. In efforts to serve all genders and age groups, the facility is designed to be both welcoming and clean, boasting six all-gender stalls and an architecture that promotes an open, ventilated environment.
These development efforts are part of the Waterfront Seattle Program's mission to rejuvenate the city's connection with its waterfront. They have rolled out transit improvements, parks, and public spaces, with the remaining projects such as Pier 58 and the anticipated restroom set for grand openings in spring 2025. The public is invited to join in the Waterfront Park Grand Opening celebration events, marking a new chapter in the city's seaside experience.
