Hawai‘i Island Police have formally charged Shawn Edward Page, 58, with multiple offenses after a prolonged armed standoff in Volcano that spanned over 24 hours. Yesterday afternoon, Page was slapped with charges including three counts of first-degree attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, along with first-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree criminal property damage, and first-degree criminal trespassing, as reported by the Hawai‘i Island Police. He is expected to make his initial court appearance on Monday afternoon.

The incident began late Wednesday morning when patrol officers were dispatched to a report of an illegal occupation at a vacant residence on Nahelenani Street. Attempts to peacefully engage with Page quickly escalated when he brandished a firearm and barricaded himself inside the property, later to routinely shoot towards the officers, effectively. According to information by the Hawai‘i Island Police, throughout the standoff, Page fired multiple shots from within the residence, including three times directly towards police personnel.

On Thursday, the standoff reached a critical juncture when the Special Response Team entered the residence, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. Page managed to breach the property and escape but was later found in nearby vegetation. Post-arrest, Page was found with a loaded pistol and sustained minor injuries, while an officer received a laceration due to broken window glass. Further complicating matters, a search of the residence revealed a potential homemade explosive device, though it was ultimately deemed non-hazardous.

The injured officer, an 18-year veteran, was duly transported to and treated at a local hospital. The officer who discharged his weapon, a 14-year veteran, has been placed on administrative leave to thoroughly undergo an administrative review, which is a routine procedure following an officer-involved shooting. The Hawai‘i Island Police extended their gratitude to the various federal and local agencies that provided support during the operation and thanked the Mauna Loa Estates community for their understanding amidst the operation.

The Hawai‘i Island Police are continuing their investigation and have invited anyone with additional information to come forward. Detective Amy Omaya of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section can be reached at (808) 961-2381 or via email at [email protected] for those who might have pertinent details relating to the incident.
