Springfield authorities have taken a firearm off the streets following an altercation involving a group of teenagers, one of whom reportedly had a gun pointed at him. The incident took place on Wilbraham Avenue, where law enforcement responded to a call about a gun being brandished yesterday evening.
According to the Springfield Police Department's report, officers were alerted around 6:00 p.m., leading to an investigation that resulted in the seizure of the weapon and several arrests. The incident involved a stolen golf cart with individuals, including the suspect, and escalated into a foot chase as two males attempted to flee.
Nelson Cruz, 28, of Springfield, was arrested after allegedly discarding the firearm over a fence on the 300 block of Walnut Street before officers could apprehend him. The firearm was later retrieved from behind the fence, linking it to the evening's incidents. Cruz now faces charges for carrying a firearm without a license and receiving stolen property valued at over $1,200.
Alongside Cruz, two juveniles were also taken into custody. The names and charges of the younger suspects have not been disclosed due to legal protections for youth offenders. The report confirmed that the golf cart involved in the incident was stolen from American International College. Other individuals present were identified and released, while the investigation remains active and ongoing.
