The San Antonio Spurs' offensive woes continued as they faced a second consecutive defeat, stumbling against the Oklahoma City Thunder with a score of 105-93 on Wednesday night. According to a report by KENS 5, the Thunder's defense managed to keep the Spurs' shooting to a mere 41.2% from the field, while Oklahoma City remained the sole undefeated team in the Western Conference with their latest victory.
San Antonio's much-touted rookie Victor Wembanyama had a particularly rough night, scoring just six points on 1-for-5 shooting against his fellow second-year big man, Chet Holmgren. Despite Wembanyama's less than stellar performance, which included eight rebounds and three blocks, the Spurs' offense couldn't seem to ignite, leading to their lowest point total of the season. As reported by Sports Illustrated, Harrison Barnes did his part, leading the Spurs with 18 points, while Jeremy Sochan backed him up with 17 points and nine rebounds, but their efforts weren't enough to lift the team to a win.
On the Oklahoma City side, Lu Dort topped the scoring with 20 points, with Chet Holmgren contributing 19. Despite a shooting slump from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who made just 7 of 20 shots, the Thunder displayed depth and versatility on the bench. A significant part of the game unfolded as the Thunder built a lead of 82-75 in the fourth quarter before capitalizing on a 9-2 run with Gilgeous-Alexander on the bench, clearly showcasing their bench strength and the Spurs' inability to respond in kind, as reported by KENS 5.
The Thunder's confidence from beyond the arc was palpable as they made a solid 17 of 41 3-point attempts, in contrast to the Spurs' 12 of 36, hinting at a disparity in shooting accuracy that night. However, the Spurs did not go gentle into their good night; they managed to cut the Thunder's lead down to seven points in the fourth quarter before Oklahoma City's run solidified their control over the game. The Spurs are set to face the Jazz next, while Oklahoma City looks forward to their clash with the Trail Blazers, Sports Illustrated notes.
With the Spurs struggling to find their rhythm early in the season, the focus will undoubtedly remain on Wembanyama's integration into the offense and how the team can better facilitate their young star. On the flip side, the Thunder continue to build momentum, setting a notably high bar in the Western Conference as the season progresses.
