As St. Johns County witnesses notable growth, a substantial injection of both federal and state funding aims to boost public safety and community services with an award totaling over $11 million. A chunk of this financial boost, precisely $7.1 million, courtesy of the FEMA Staffing for Adequate Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants Program, is earmarked for hiring 21 additional firefighters. These funds, according to St. Johns County's announcement, aim to scale up the emergency response capabilities in the region to national fire safety standards.
The arrival of the new firefighters promises to be a landmark upgrade in the southwest region, with plans to station them at a new fire station. The funding encompasses the total cost of salary, and benefits for the firefighters for a span of three years. This personnel advancement is expected to improve response times, up staffing levels, and elevate service delivery for both residents, and visitors. "St. Johns County Fire Rescue is always there and always ready to help our community, especially in a time of crisis,” U.S. Congressman John Rutherford (FL-05) told St. Johns County. He added that the funding will help save lives by ensuring first responders can reach where they need to be promptly.
In addition, St. Johns County Fire Rescue aced obtaining a Technical Assistance Grant from the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration totaling $50,489. This grant will fund the purchase of a natural gas pipeline fire training simulator. In partnership with TECO Peoples Gas, this simulator aims to uplift the skillset of firefighters for emergencies such as natural gas pipeline fires. Rutherford emphasized the importance of this equipment in training, "Simulators like these will help improve fire rescue training and response effectiveness," he explained on the St. Johns County website.
The windfall doesn't stop with enhancements to the fire rescue services. The community is also set to benefit from a robust $4 million grant from Florida Commerce, channeling towards constructing the new Hastings Library and Community Center. This multifaceted project aims to build community resources complete with classrooms, multi-purpose spaces, telehealth rooms, and a food pantry. Speaking on the groundbreaking development, St. Johns County Chair Sarah Arnold expressed enthusiasm about the county staff's drive, "This is a great example of how County staff are working to identify innovative ways to fund our critical infrastructure projects," as she told St. Johns County. Arnold anticipates the center fostering significant strides in education, health, and community interaction within the Hastings area.
