Early Monday morning, a series of incidents occurred on Billy Graham Parkway near Josh Birmingham Parkway in west Charlotte. An accident involving a North Carolina State Highway Patrol vehicle and a small car resulted in the patrol vehicle being towed and one person hospitalized with serious injuries, though details of the crash are unclear, according to WBTV. As the day went on, a fire broke out in the vehicle and the fire department was called to remove nearby foliage. WCNC Charlotte reported that these events caused significant traffic backups and raised questions about their connection.
The Charlotte Fire Department was dispatched to clear foliage that had entangled a Highway Patrol car following the crash, where despite the car's veil of branches, the WCNC Charlotte crew witnessed its retrieval from beneath this green shroud revealing the extent of damage post-fire around 7 a.m. which subsequently was towed away by 8:30 a.m, meanwhile, the overall impact on traffic flow was mitigated with the reopening of the southbound lanes of the parkway. Concerns about if and how the two incidents might be interlinked are yet to be officially addressed by the local state trooper's office or fire officials, the affected patrol car's ultimate fate being a radar blip in the morning's traffic pattern.
Adding to the scene's complexity, Queen City News reported that a patrol car caught fire on the busy thoroughfare, leading to the closure of outbound lanes toward Woodlawn Road while emergency services responded. Despite the chaos, reports confirmed that the trooper involved was okay. As the day began, Charlotte's busy parkway was filled with emergency services, flashing lights, and congested traffic.
NCSHP investigations will aim to clarify the morning's events in the coming days. All lanes of Billy Graham Parkway have reopened, and traffic is flowing normally again.
