A high-speed police chase involving a stolen vehicle ended in tragedy on a Los Angeles County freeway this past Wednesday. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has identified the deceased driver as 26-year-old Anna Zauner, confirmed by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Starting in Sylmar around 2 p.m., the pursuit followed a 2024 Honda CRV, reported stolen, that Zauner was operating at dangerously high speeds and ended in a calamitous crash in the Antelope Valley.
The chase spanned multiple freeways. After being first spotted near the 210 Freeway, Zauner was observed to powerfully accelerate, at times hitting speeds over 110 mph, according to NBC Los Angeles. Her journey took her through Santa Clarita and up into Kern County. During the relentless pursuit, Zauner tried to outmaneuver traffic, sometimes driving along the center divider or shoulder, in efforts to escape law enforcement's grip.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) took over the pursuit as it continued. As reported by ABC7, the chase saw Zauner weaving through lanes and a construction zone. Eventually, in a desperate attempt to keep ahead, she careened onto the transition road to the Lancaster 138 Freeway but lost control. The SUV veered onto the dirt shoulder and violently collided with a concrete overpass support column.
Zauner's death was pronounced at the crash site. All the high-speed maneuvers, which included swerving to avoid objects on the road, culminated in the SUV flipping and crashing, as per details from FOX LA. The circumstances detailing how the vehicle was stolen initially remain unclear. The incident and the factors leading up to it are currently under CHP investigation. This devastating event reflects the stark and sometimes somber outcomes of vehicular crimes and their intersections with public safety on our freeways.
