In the wake of Hurricane Helene's destruction, the City of Tampa is taking action to assist residents in reaching critical comfort stations, providing free Uber ride vouchers to help facilitate access to essential services. These vouchers, as reported by City of Tampa, aim to alleviate transportation barriers for individuals affected by the storm, covering up to $25 for two round-trip Uber rides.
"We know that many in our community are facing overwhelming hardships right now, and we are here to help in any way we can," said Mayor Jane Castor in a statement on the city's official website. Mayor Castor continues to stress the importance of community support during these trying times and believes the vouchers will offer families a small sense of relief. The transportation initiative is a key part of the response, recognizing that for some, their means to navigate the cityscape has been washed away by floodwaters.
The Comfort Stations this city has selected include Gandy Civic Association, Marjorie Park Marina, and DeSoto Park, and are open every day of the week at various times. These locations offer residents services such as mobile laundry, showers, electronic charging points, alongside food, water, and assistance with repair permits for homes and businesses impacted by Hurricane Helene.
Residents who are looking to take advantage of the Tampa Emergency Transportation Service, which is available now until the night of October 25, can visit Tampa.gov to register for the voucher. Instructions on the site relay that the vouchers will be accessible through the Uber app, good for up to four Uber rides (two round trips) and each trip has a limit of $25 value.
