A federal jury has delivered guilty verdicts against four high-ranking members of the notorious Nuestra Familia prison gang. According to a U.S. Department of Justice press release, the convictions include racketeering, murder conspiracy, attempted murder, drug distribution, and money laundering. The group has long been recognized as a driver of criminal activities within and beyond the walls of California's prisons.
Martha Boersch, Chief of the Office of the U.S. Attorney’s Criminal Division, pulled no punches in her assessment of the situation, saying, according to the U.S. Department of Justice press release, "Prison gangs are a blight on the criminal justice system and on society." Boersch underscored the point that prisons, which are designed to protect and rehabilitate, have been undermined by the presence of such gangs. Their reach, facilitated by contraband cell phones, among other tools, allows them to continue illicit activities even while incarcerated.
The extensive trial, lasting 12 weeks, took place under U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers and involved testimony from over 50 witnesses and dozens of wiretapped phone calls. Each defendant, David Cervantes, James Perez, Guillermo Solorio, and George Franco, was unveiled as playing vital and violent roles in orchestrating crimes across the Bay Area. Their connections penetrated every county, evidencing the pervasive threat posed by this syndicate.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp, representing a unit responsible for eight years of investigative efforts leading to this outcome, stated through U.S. Department of Justice press release, "We have dismantled a core part of this criminal enterprise, whose illicit drug distribution and violent crime have long plagued our community." He highlighted the FBI's ongoing commitment to bringing such criminals to justice, illustrating the unrelenting pursuit of gang leaders no matter their operational base.
The penalties hanging over the heads of the convicted are severe, with each facing life imprisonment. Judge Gonzalez Rogers has scheduled sentencing for March 6, 2025. This trial concludes a chapter that has seen the government secure convictions against all 7 Nuestra Familia's General Council members.
