In a move designed to ramp up security measures for public transportation, TriMet has announced the installation of new blue light security phones at MAX station platforms. These installations were reported as the transit agency's effort to deter crime and assuage rider safety concerns. The first of these phones were deployed at the Rose Quarter Transit Center and the Convention Center Station, as stated by KOIN.

While seeking to serve as tangible lifelines for commuters in distress, the phones are equipped with security cameras to enhance TriMet's surveillance capabilities. The accompanying cameras will not only record station activities but also allow security personnel to see the callers, as reported by KGW. These new phones come in a noticeable red color, hoping to provide an easy-to-find resource for riders in the potential chaos of a commute gone awry.

The phones offer a direct line to TriMet's security staff, who are available around the clock, ready to respond to reports of suspicious behavior, vandalism, graffiti, or other needs for assistance. In their communication with the public, TriMet expresses a commitment to safety and the importance of giving people peace of mind while using the transit system. "We want to hear from you," TriMet encourages riders on their official news site, reminding them of the more than 8,000 cameras already monitoring the system and their capability to be observed in real-time.

The concept behind the blue-light phones is not new. Having been an established safety emblem on college campuses for over three decades, they endorse an atmosphere of vigilance and security. These systems have been implemented locally at institutions like Portland State University and Portland Community College. The value of this initiative has been validated by case studies, such as the one at Rice University, where, after the installation of blue-light phones, a significant decrease in certain criminal activities was reported, specifically, a drop in burglaries by 68%. These statistics reflect the utility of the blue-light phones and bolster the philosophy that the visibility of security measures can be a powerful crime deterrent.

In addition to the presence of these security phones, TriMet also offers riders the ability to contact security staff via text or call a dedicated hotline. This dual approach, which leverages blue-light phones and personal mobile devices, is part of a layered strategy to ensure comprehensive coverage and prompt response regardless of the situation.
