In the quiet atmosphere of Plymouth, Massachusetts, a silence has settled over a story of serious abuse. Nehemya Smith, a 37-year-old "elder" of the Twelve Tribes religious organization, is now facing legal consequences as he approaches sentencing. After being convicted on 25 counts of child rape and indecent assault, Smith is scheduled for sentencing in Fall River Superior Court today, as per Boston 25 News.
As reported by WCVB, the litany of charges includes 12 counts of aggravated rape of a child and multiple incidences of indecent assault. The suffering endured by two young girls, who lived in the same communal residence as Smith, between 2016 and 2020, is significant and cannot be overlooked. The alleged offenses extended across multiple jurisdictions, prompting Barnstable and Norfolk Counties to consolidate their cases with Bristol County for a unified prosecution.
The allegations originated from the bravery of two siblings, former members of the Twelve Tribes, who, after leaving the organization, uncovered the disturbing story and promptly notified law enforcement. According to Boston 25 News, the victims, who lived with their parents in the community, experienced significant trauma—one was between 14 and 16 years old, while the other was between 12 and 15 at the time of the incidents.
Smith, who held a position of authority as an elder, is now facing imprisonment. As he awaits sentencing, it remains to be seen how those affected will respond as justice proceeds.
