Two individuals have been charged in connection with the shooting of undercover detectives, according to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters' recent announcement. The detectives, part of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, were shot at while conducting a narcotics investigation on September 20. The suspects, identified as Anthony Trotter, 22, and Ja'von Brown, 23, are facing two counts of attempted murder. News4Jax reports that Brown fired approximately 18 shots at the unmarked vehicle, while Trotter acted as the getaway driver.
Details from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office revealed that the shooting occurred on Florida Avenue at the intersection with East 22nd Street. In a chaotic moment, the detectives' vehicle was targeted and hit by several rounds, "narrowly" missing those inside. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office official Facebook page, the teamwork among multiple units led to the quick arrest of both suspects within six days of the shooting. They used surveillance footage and advanced technology to track down the silver sedan involved in the incident, arresting Trotter during a traffic stop. Brown was later detained after the SWAT team surrounded his home.
During the arrest, one of the detectives sustained minor injuries and a cut to his arm. Reports indicate that investigators believe Brown mistakenly thought he was shooting at rival gang members instead of law enforcement officers. First Coast News provided details about the threats the detectives faced during their undercover operation.
Brown and Trotter are currently being held at the Duval County jail, facing serious charges due to the attack on law enforcement. The investigation received support from various Jacksonville Sheriff's Office units, including the Robbery and Violent Crimes Unit, the Gang Unit, and the State Attorney’s Office, showing the thorough response to the assault on their officers.
