A tragic scene unfolded in a Rochester Hills neighborhood after a home invasion led to the death of a local homeowner. Carlos Hernandez, 37, and Joshua Zuazo, 39, are accused of posing as utility workers to enter the home of Hussein Murray, 72, who was later found dead in his basement.
Hernandez, after being extradited from Louisiana, was arraigned in Rochester Hills and denied bond. According to Audacy, he faces charges of felony murder and unlawful imprisonment. His accused accomplice, Zuazo, faces the same charges and was also denied bond earlier, having pled not guilty. During a traffic stop in Shreveport, Louisiana, Hernandez was apprehended and later transported back to Michigan.
The two men allegedly tried to enter the Murrays' home under the pretense they were DTE workers investigating a gas leak. After being initially turned away, they managed to convince Murray to take them to the basement on their subsequent visit, as reported by CBS Detroit. Murray's wife, who was bound and gagged during the incident, survived and alerted authorities. She believed her husband had been kidnapped, only for officials to later find his body bound in the home's basement.
Both suspects are being held in the Oakland County Jail. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald described the killings as shocking, both for the deception involved and the subsequent brutality. "This was a shocking crime, both in the deception used to invade the victims' home and in the brutality of the murder itself," she said. Hernandez is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on November 4, as per the CBS Detroit.
DTE officials have since advised the public to remain vigilant against potential imposters, emphasizing the importance of verifying identity before allowing individuals access to one's home. Amidst the tragedy, life imprisonment without parole stands as the potential punishment for the felony murder charges, with additional penalties for unlawful imprisonment up to 15 years and/or fines up to $20,000, underscoring the gravity of the crime.
