Efforts are ramping up in Tennessee to curb the growing issue of human-bear encounters, especially regarding access to trash. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) is offering a hefty sum—in the form of grants—to help in purchasing bear-resistant garbage containers. According to WATE, there's $250,000 available for local governments, communities, and businesses to buy these animal-proof trash solutions.
The need for bear-resistant containers has surged with increasing interactions between humans and bears, leading to this initiative which TWRA hopes will mitigate these conflicts, part of a broader endeavor to secure garbage in areas where bears roam, as reported by WBIR. A "scored" application process will be used to determine who receives funding and for what amounts, applications are due by October 31, and more information can be sought directly by emailing Dan Gibbs at TWRA.
For residents looking to modify their trash cans bear-resistant measures can be learned from BearWise.org, an educational resource funded by state wildlife agencies that provides information on how to live responsibly alongside black bears, helping individuals contribute to the larger goal of reducing those all-too-common human-bear conflicts, as mentioned by WATE.
