The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is gaining recognition for its innovative efforts to address homelessness. At their recent Bridging the Gap Symposium, the Department's initiative received praise for its proactive measures to improve the lives of individuals often seen along highways like I-35. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Administrator Shailen Bhatt commended the program during a virtual chat, stating, “My heart is warmed by all the work that you’re doing today,” according to the Texas Department of Transportation website.

The symposium showcased TxDOT's impactful initiative, especially the Esperanza Community project that provides shelter and essential services. Bhatt commented, “There are many people who have come through the Esperanza Community, and they’re on a path to something better.” Representatives from 18 states and Washington, D.C. attended, sharing insights and viewing the Texas Department of Transportation's model as a potential national template, as per the Texas Department of Transportation.

A key aspect of the Texas Department of Transportation's approach is education and collaboration. Over 75 employees and contractors received training in mental health first aid to better support the homeless community. The initiative also builds on partnerships with mental health professionals and active involvement from the homeless sector. Mike Arellano, Deputy Austin District Engineer, emphasized the significance of dialogue: “This symposium is important because it starts a national dialogue on how DOTs can engage in addressing homelessness,” in a statement obtained by the Texas Department of Transportation.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, engagement is evident in the partnership with The Other Ones Foundation, which supports the core of the Texas Department of Transportation's program. A 7-acre expansion of the Esperanza Community is planned to begin later this year, potentially doubling its capacity. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson recognized this initiative by declaring July 25 as “Mike Arellano and Lori Wagner Day” to honor the Texas Department of Transportation Programs Manager and her colleague's commitment to the Mobility35 Initiative to Address Homelessness.
