The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) will temporarily close runway 17-35 at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA). The closures are scheduled nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., starting November 1, and ending November 23, with a second round from December 6 to December 16.
This initiative is a segment of the KOA Runway 17-35 Rehabilitation Project, targeting the upgrade and repair of the airport's main airstrip. The undertaking will necessitate the installation of temporary aircraft navigation systems and, starting in February 2025, the runway length will see a temporary reduction to 7,000 feet to accommodate continuous flight operations during the renovation period as per HDOT reports.
HDOT is working to update the airport's infrastructure to meet current Federal Aviation Administration guidelines. This includes rehabilitating the asphalt and cement concrete on the runway. The agency is committed to improving airport facilities statewide, with the project expected to last until April 2026. Passengers flying during the affected hours should check their flight status with their airline, as construction schedules may change due to weather.
To reduce disruptions, HDOT has developed a plan in consultation with airlines and stakeholders to minimize the impact of construction on flights. HDOT states, "Passengers are advised to check with their airline for information specific to their flights," acknowledging that operations at KOA may have some issues, the work is essential for the airport's safety and efficiency.
