On Sunday, a late-night sideshow attracted around 100 spectators for an illegal display of spinning donuts and traffic obstruction at Tennessee and Sacramento streets. According to a Facebook post by the Vallejo Police Department, the spontaneous event quickly escalated beyond noise and fumes.
Fortunately, as the chaos unfolded, the California Highway Patrol's (CHP) Air Unit was overhead, providing a bird's-eye view of the mayhem, which included the theft of a street sign by one participant. This suspect placed the sign inside a stolen 2016 Hyundai Elantra before making their hasty exit. Using the CHP Air Unit's guidance, the patrol officers from Vallejo PD initiated a chase but were forced to back off due to concerns for public safety.
Refusing to let the incident slide, the CHP picked up the chase, which spanned to Oakland. The pursuit came to a standstill when the Elantra became disabled. All five male passengers bolted from the vehicle but didn't get far. Three were apprehended while running from the scene.
Digging through the Elantra, another stolen street sign turned up. The three suspects faced multiple felony charges and a ride to the Solano County Jail. The car, meanwhile, was towed while the owner was contacted about the recovery.
