This honor was announced in Travel Texas' inaugural year of their certification program, highlighting Waco's dedication to cultivating tourism as a driving force for economic prosperity and job creation.
As reported by the Office of the Texas Governor, Governor Greg Abbott shared his congratulations with the City of Waco, praising the local efforts that have led to the city's burgeoning reputation as a traveler's haven: "Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas," he stated. To add to this, Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell imparted on the City of Waco's commitment to hospitality and their dynamic mix of attractions as key factors that make it an exemplary destination. Despite generating over $193.8 billion in economic impact and supporting over 1.3 million jobs across the state in 2023, every corner of Texas still beckons with its own unique offerings.
With attractions like the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, the Silos at Magnolia, and Cameron Park, Waco was lauded by Senator Brian Birdwell who, in a statement obtained by the Governor's Office, declared, "The economic impact of tourism on local communities is important, and I am pleased Waco is being recognized by Travel Texas through the Office of the Governor." Waco Mayor Jim Holmes also recognized tourism's substantial cultural and economic benefits to the city, mentioning several of Waco's draws like the Doris Miller Memorial and the Magnolia Market at the Silos.
Representative Angelia Orr celebrated Waco's achievement, considering the city's renowned hospitality and entertainment opportunities, according to the Office of the Texas Governor. The recognition of Waco as a "Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community" is believed to be a reflection of the hardworking families and community leaders who foster these inviting atmospheres that characterize this city. Similarly, McLennan County Judge Scott Felton highlighted the unique blend of charm and history that Waco offers to both residents and travelers.
Application to the Tourism Friendly Texas Community program is open to local governments or non-profit organizations that serve as lead entities for tourism promotion and development.
