A Warren man faces charges after a fatal hit-and-run incident in Eastpointe, officials reported. Last Wednesday evening, a deadly crash on Gratiot Avenue killed a 30-year-old pedestrian, identified as Christopher Pounce Jr.
According to ClickOnDetroit, witnesses observed a man down on Gratiot Avenue near Chestnut Avenue; upon their arrival, Eastpointe Police discovered Pounce Jr.'s body between the middle and right travel lanes, having sustained fatal injuries after being hit by a silver four-door sedan the vehicle stopped only for a brief moment before fleeing northbound on Gratiot Avenue.
Authorities arrested 52-year-old Adib Mikha Estefo on Friday, charging him with failing to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death. His bond was set at $75,000 cash with conditions that, if released, include not leaving Michigan state limits, wearing a GPS tether, undergoing random drug and alcohol screening, and surrendering his passport.
"Failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident is not only a violation of the law, but an unconscionable act that denies the victim the dignity they deserve. We will ensure that these actions have the consequences and the defendant is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido is quoted as saying in a statement obtained by the Macomb County government website.
Estefo’s next court appearance includes a probable cause hearing on October 8 and a preliminary examination scheduled for October 15.
