An arrest has been made following a reported incident involving threats and alleged hate speech in Northwest, Washington, D.C. The event, which unfolded yesterday in the 3100 block of 14th Street at around 3:00 p.m., resulted in the apprehension of Jasmine Cunningham, a 28-year-old resident of the area, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Cunningham is accused of engaging in a verbal confrontation with a local employee, during which she made threats and used derogatory homophobic slurs, leading to her being flagged to officers already at the scene for a separate destruction of property complaint; quickly, they stepped in to detain her.
The official MPD report states that Cunningham was arrested and faces charges of Threat to Kidnap or Injure a Person and Theft in the Second Degree. Apart from the immediate charges, the MPD's investigation into the incident continues with the possibility of it being classified as a hate crime, which could change the complexion of the case during prosecution.
Though MPD has tagged the case as potentially hate-motivated, this does not ascertain how the prosecutors will decide to proceed as the Special Liaison Branch assists with the investigation because a designation as a hate crime by MPD ought not dictate judicial proceedings, the designation rather, serves as a framework within which the police understand and investigate the incident.
