Wellstar Health System has confirmed plans for revitalizing the site of the former Atlanta Medical Center, which closed down nearly two years ago. This 22-acre site on Boulevard is expected to be transformed into a mixed-use neighborhood, featuring affordable housing, community green spaces, neighborhood retail, and health and well-being resources. According to a news release obtained by Atlanta News First, Wellstar officials have stated this project would fulfill the vision of a "vibrant, diverse mixed-use neighborhood."
In a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens highlighted the administration's nearly two-year effort culminating in an inclusive and forward-looking development plan. Yet, since its closure, concerns among community advocates have risen, fearing that the redevelopment could fall short in addressing emergency medical needs that the former hospital used to provide to the community. Embarking to establish dialogue with the surrounding stakeholders, Integral Group aims to identify and integrate the healthcare needs within the neighborhood, the old hospital once catered to.
Candice Saunders, Wellstar's president and CEO, expressed commitment to working closely with the city to reinvigorate the area, noting the shared ambitions of a healthy and thriving addition to the Old Fourth Ward. Meanwhile, City Councilman Michael J. Bond sees the redevelopment as a boon to downtown Atlanta's vibrancy and growth, as told to Atlanta News First.
While the project promises new life to the Old Fourth Ward, it faces concerns from residents like Chance K, who articulated anxieties over potential gentrification in an interview with Atlanta News First. The resident shared fears that lower-income community members may be priced out, altering the affordability and accessibility of the neighborhood. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the redevelopment is expected to proceed in phases over several years, with the demolition of certain structures slated to commence in early 2025.
