Following the post-game tumult at John Glenn High School's homecoming football game, which saw 12 juveniles arrested and officers assaulted, the Wayne Westland School District in partnership with Westland police, has decided to tighten restrictions at future football games. The measures put into place include guest limitations, a requirement for guest list submissions by players and performers, ticket purchases through GoFan, mandatory adult supervision for minors, and spectator restrictions. These changes aim to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring.
On Friday, as the crowds exited the field into the parking lot, multiple fights erupted among juveniles, which Westland police attempted to manage. A statement obtained by ClickOnDetroit explains the severity of the disruption, leading to several officers being assaulted—one sustaining multiple punches and another diagnosed with a concussion and neck strain. In addition to these injuries, one police officer's bodycam was stolen during the altercation but was later recovered after investigative efforts.
In the aftermath, Westland Mayor Kevin Coleman stated his awareness of the situation and noted that no students were seriously injured. According to a post shared by CBS Detroit, Mayor Coleman highlighted the interdisciplinary effort involving officers from neighboring cities to quell the disturbance. The Westland Police Department, understanding the community's concern, is also working in close cooperation with the school district to approach the ongoing issues that this region has been facing at high school football games.
The new safety plan, collaboratively devised by the Westland Police Department Administration and the Wayne Westland Community School District Administration, enforces the stipulation that all Football players, band members, and cheerleaders will be permitted to bring five guests to the games, as detailed in a statement on the Westland Police Community Partnership's Facebook page. As a precautionary measure, no other spectators will be allowed to attend upcoming games until further notices has been communicated to the public.
The Westland Police Department continues to investigate the incident, urging community members with any pertinent information to come forward and contact them at (734) 722-9600.
