Traffic on Wilkinson Boulevard in west Charlotte has returned to normal after a serious crash early Wednesday morning. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the incident occurred near Tuckaseegee Road, leading to a lengthy closure that affected traffic back to Charlotte Douglas International Airport and into the I-485 loop, WBTV reports.
As daylight broke over Charlotte, the wreckage was cleared, and the road fully reopened just before 11 a.m., easing potential delays for airport travelers. The area between Tuckaseegee and Sam Wilson Roads was most affected by the crash, while emergency response efforts concentrated near the I-485 exits, QC News reported.
One traveler was hit hard by the crash, as Medic confirmed that one person suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. While the cause of the wreck is still unknown, those on the road encountered downed power lines and flashing police lights throughout the morning, disrupting daily routines, WCNC notes.
As operations returned to normal, Charlotte Douglas International Airport warned travelers to expect delays due to the incident, a message shared widely on social media and in news reports. While roads were being cleared and the injured received care, the airport's announcement disrupted the usual flow of travel. Traffic on Wilkinson Boulevard resumed, as reported by WCNC.
