Phoenix authorities have reported the arrest of a woman at Sky Harbor International Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of fentanyl. Martisha Missouri Montgomery, 24, was found to be carrying luggage containing an estimated 50,000 fentanyl pills when she was stopped for a routine security check.
According to a post by the Phoenix Police Department on their X page, the arrest occurred on Sept. 16, after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials flagged the suspicious luggage. "During further TSA inspection, six sealed bricks were located within the suitcase liner," detailed the court documents obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. The packages were said to be double sealed in food saver plastic vacuum bags, and wrapped in tape.
The suspect was planning a trip from Phoenix to Atlanta, but was intercepted by law enforcement before she could board the flight. After her arrest, Montgomery reportedly provided personal information during the post-Miranda interview, but ceased answering when questioned on the specifics of her travel.
Montgomery now faces charges including felony narcotic drug transportation, as noted in court proceedings. The padding of fentanyl inside her suitcase represents, not just an individual felony, but an unspoken narrative carried in the weight of these kilo bricks—a narrative of an ongoing public health crisis that tightropes the corridors of our nation's transport systems. According to 12 News, each brick was suspected to contain fentanyl powder, elevating the case's significance given the potent nature of the opioid involved.
Montgomery is currently in custody as the investigation continues.
