Earlier this morning, residents of Butler City experienced a wave of law enforcement activity as Pennsylvania State Police, along with other agencies, conducted drug-related search warrants. In an operation that began just after 7 a.m., officials issued a shelter-in-place order for the area surrounding North Chestnut and Locust streets, lifted about 30 minutes later. According to WPXI, the operation concluded with 14 individuals taken into custody.
While the specifics behind the execution of the searches have not been disclosed, the shelter-in-place order was a precaution issued to ensure the safety of the community. Trooper Bertha Cazy, conveying the nature of the procedure, shared with WPXI that the intent was "to be safe while we get in and get out as fast as possible." Amidst the operation, the use of explosive breaches and flashbangs, deployed to remove individuals from the houses, might've been mistaken as gunfire by residents. Richard McClelland, a resident in the area, expressed his alarm, instructing his family, "None of the kids are to leave the house, period."
The agencies involved in the operation included the Butler County Drug Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration, collaborating with the Attorney General's office. Yet, despite the individuals' custody, information regarding the exact charges remains pending. The police have not released the address of the home or homes targeted in the search, as reported by Butler Radio.
Authorities haven’t confirmed how many of the 14 detained will face or what those charges might be. Updates are expected as the investigation continues.
