Last month's discovery of 17 dogs living in a pickup truck in Walker has led to a heartwarming opportunity for those seeking to expand their families with a four-legged friend. The Kent County Animal Shelter has announced that these dogs, which now total 19 following the birth of two puppies, are ready for adoption. The owner of the dogs, Carolyn Newsome, has been charged with animal abuse and has surrendered the animals to the shelter's care.

As reported by FOX 17, among the prospective adopters is Emmy Dufort, who expressed her enthusiasm for providing a home to one of these dogs, particularly a Pomeranian named Patches. "it's always nice to see dogs being taken out of that situation and being able to get into good homes, especially now that it's around Christmastime and people are looking for dogs," Dufort stated.

To encourage adoption, the shelter is offering a special rate. "All pets are adoptable for a reduced $50 fee through Dec. 1," according to a statement from the Kent County Animal Shelter, as reported by WZZM13. This fee includes a Kent County dog license, flea and tick preventative, and heartworm preventative, ensuring new pet owners can start on the right paw with their newest family member.

The shelter has been caring for these dogs since October 14th, when they were found in concerning conditions without water and amidst significant amounts of feces, according to WZZM13. The shelter has since been working on socializing the dogs and preparing them for life in a loving home. Angela Hollinshead, director of the shelter, emphasized their commitment to aiding adopters: "If you are ready to welcome a new best friend into your life, our compassionate and knowledgeable staff are here to help you," she stated. With adoption hours set from 1 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, the community can make this holiday season memorable for the dogs and their potential new owners.
