South Milwaukee has approved a $50 million mixed-use redevelopment project at the former Bucyrus campus. The plan includes 171 apartments, a new building, and 22,500 square feet of commercial space for rent. The project was announced by local officials including Mayor Erik Brooks and former Bucyrus CEO Tim Sullivan, according to the City of South Milwaukee.

The project plans to offer a mix of 90 market-rate and affordable housing units. The affordable units will be available to households earning 60% and 80% of the Milwaukee County median income. Rent for market-rate townhomes is expected to be around $2,850 per month. For affordable housing, a three-bedroom apartment will cost about $2,124 per month for households earning between $57,200 and $81,680 annually. For those earning between $42,900 and $61,260, rent for the same apartment will start at $1,371 per month, as reported by the City of South Milwaukee.

The redevelopment project in South Milwaukee aims to strengthen both community ties and local commerce. "This opportunity highlights what can be accomplished when multiple levels of government work together," said Mayor Shelenske. However, concerns about affordability and the potential displacement of long-time residents remain, as the project moves forward. Set for completion in 2026, as stated by the City of South Milwaukee.
