In a late-night incident on Long Island, Lorrie Ibe, 54, has been charged with driving while intoxicated after her vehicle caused a destructive fire at the Suffolk County Marine Center. As reported by ABC7NY, Ibe was allegedly seen driving her car in the wrong direction before the crash that ignited several boats.

Upon crossing the median into the correct lane on Route 231 in Babylon, Ibe continued to drive erratically, hitting road signs and eventually smashing through a fence and into a boat. This collision led to a fire that quickly spread to quickly engulf three more boats. Amid the chaos, local police officers and a helpful bystander managed to pull Ibe to safety from her vehicle, reports New York Daily News.

The events unfolded around 10 p.m. yesterday evening at the intersection of Route 231 and East Main Street. Ibe, behind the wheel of a 2021 Kia Forte, had first drawn attention by traveling southbound in northbound lanes and proceeded to dramatically crash through the marine center's barriers. The Babylon Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze, which caused significant damage but did not result in any other injuries or fatalities according to the authorities.

After being extracted from the car and given initial medical attention, Ibe was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. She is set to be arraigned when physically able to attend court, as local law enforcement prepares to hold her accountable for the repercussions of the dangerous drive. Ibe's arrest brings to light the ongoing dangers of intoxicated driving, an issue that Long Island is to continue to closely monitor in the wake of this and past incidents, such as an earlier fatal boat crash in Great South Bay covered by New York Daily News.
