Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department battled a blaze early this morning at a Koreatown construction site, as reported by the LAFD's incident alert. The structure, a 13-story office building located at 550 South Vermont Avenue, was seen with smoke emerging from the roof at around 8:46 AM. The fire department's initial response saw crews ascending stairwells where they encountered smoke on the third floor and immediately requested additional forces.
Within a swift 33 minutes, 64 firefighters achieved a knockdown of the fire, according to the follow-up alert provided by the Los Angeles Fire Department. The source of the fire was traced to the basement of the 12-story commercial building which is under renovation, it's believed that sparks from work in the elevator shaft fell into rubbish leading to the fire, with no injuries reported, fire crews then worked to ventilate the large building which was filled with smoke and continued to check for both occupants and any further spread of the fire.
Traffic impact in the area was significant due to the incident, especially at the intersection of South Vermont and West 6th Street where drivers were advised to seek alternate routes through the bustling Koreatown neighborhood. As firefighters labored on the scene to clear the building of smoke and ensure complete extinguishment of the fire, LAFD's on-site personnel were also set to begin a more comprehensive search of each floor, an extended operation challenged by the lack of a functioning HVAC system to assist in clearing the environment of particulates.
LAFD PIO Firefighter David Ortiz was en route for media availability to provide updates and answer questions regarding the fire and the department's response, as the firefighters made thorough progress on ensuring the safety and structural integrity of the building post-incident, the department’s efforts reflected a coordinated response to a potentially hazardous situation.
