Arizona's commitment to electoral precision is set to undergo another rigorous test as Secretary of State Adrian Fontes has confirmed automatic recount procedures for hairbreadth races in the 2024 General Election. As the state law mandates, any race where the vote total between candidates or options falls within a 0.5% margin must be automatically recounted. "The counties will canvass the General Election results on November 21, 2024. Recounts will be filed in court on November 22, and we will carry out a statewide canvass on November 25, 2024, to ensure we take the time necessary for accuracy in our elections," Fontes was quoted in a recent announcement.
Specifics taken from the Secretary of State's website outline that a lawsuit must be filed to initiate the recount, which then kicks off a process including Logic and Accuracy (L&A) testing on all electronic voting equipment to ensure result integrity. Paper ballots will then be re-tabulated, eschewing any interim results to the populace, until the final reveal in court. As per Arizona Revised Statues, subsequent hand count audits will run mandatorily for key races to bolster confidence in the recounted tally.
Beyond the recounts, Fontes' office notes the additional steps that are to be faithfully executed: a hand count audit involving both election officials and party representatives is to follow, meticulously covering at least 5% of vote centers, as per the Arizona Secretary of State. If the race in question pertains to the Secretary of State's own, responsibility is transferred to the Governor to prepare and test voting equipment, in adherence to state law. These steps serve to ensure that, at every stage, the democratic process is both scrutinized and upheld.
