A Maserati-driving suspect, sought for assault with a deadly weapon, led Los Angeles police on a chase Tuesday through several neighborhoods before a confrontation in West Adams ended with gunfire. According to CBS News Los Angeles, the chase featured erratic driving including running red lights and weaving through traffic at speeds close to the limit.
The pursuit began near the Long Beach-San Pedro area after the suspect allegedly followed a DASH bus driven by his ex-boyfriend, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. It continued into Inglewood, where the suspect's ex-boyfriend, identified the man behind the wheel. The suspect's drive was marked by danger, as at least four drivers had to swerve to avoid his car on the wrong side of the road.
When the chase concluded in West Adams, the Los Angeles Police Department said the armed suspect appeared to draw a pair of handguns before being shot by officers, as per KTLA. Authorities had not immediately determined whether the man was struck by police gunfire or if he fired the weapon that lay on the ground near where he collapsed.
After the individual, who has not been named, parked and exited the vehicle in the parking lot of a multi-unit building on Jefferson Boulevard, he allegedly approached officers with what appeared to be two handguns. The LAPD officers then responded with gunfire, and the suspect fell to the ground. "His condition wasn’t immediately clear," FOX LA reported, but first responders were seen taking a gurney to the scene. Blood and at least one firearm were found at the site of the shooting, and no officers were reported injured.
Paramedics attended to the driver as well as at least one other person at the scene. Additionally, three women were detained by police in West Adams, though their connection to the pursuit is yet to be clarified. Details are still emerging as the investigation into the incident continues.
