Mayor Andre Dickens celebrated a notable triumph with the announcement of the successful outcomes of the 2024 Summer Youth Employment Program in Atlanta. According to a report on the city's official website, the program provided a record-breaking number of employment and training opportunities for the city's younger residents.
The summer initiative, which is a concentrated effort to nurture the forthcoming workforce, saw the registration of 6,055 young individuals aged 14 to 24. "By equipping youth with job skills, mentorship, and opportunities, we are not just creating the next generation of an efficient and capable work force, but we are also fostering a new generation of innovators, thinkers, and contributors to Atlanta’s growth," said Mayor Dickens, affirming the city's resolve to pave a robust path for their youth, as reported on the City of Atlanta website. Regrettably, registering for the program, only 5,700 of the youth found their match in job placements.
As per the report, available on the City of Atlanta's website, participants notched up a combined 206,432 work hours, pulling in an aggregate of $6.8 million in wages. These young Atlantans earned an average of $17.70 per hour across an array of sectors, substantiating the program's diverse professional exposure.
Complementing salaries, integral to the program's extensive reach, were supported by more than $3.6 million from city funds and an additional $3.1 million through private collaborations. The Atlanta Department of Labor and Employment Services was crucial in coupling youth with roles that resonated with their career aspirations, but it also echoed the Dickens Administration’s goals, such as improving economic mobility and engendering safe environments through the formulation of thriving neighborhoods.
Moreover, the employment program underlined the importance of ethics and transparency, educating practically engaged youths on financial literacy along with the necessary soft skills and workplace decorum.
