Aurora's infrastructure is seeing a wave of enhancements with up to 100 active work zones on any workday, striving to mitigate disruptions while adhering to safety and regulations. This effort is a balancing act, coordinating with contractors to avoid total street closures and limiting the duration and overlap of lane closures. However, unpredictable elements such as weather and unforeseen site conditions occasionally push schedules off course, resulting in unintended congestion.
To keep residents in the loop, the city offers a weekly construction roundup via email subscription. The city has also launched a new interactive map detail to actively display myriad projects tied to roadway travel that may affect daily commutes. With 2024's construction projects constantly evolving, officials urge travelers to use designated detours but caution that navigation apps may direct drivers along less optimal routes, according to the City of Aurora.
Beginning December 2, travelers can expect lane closures on East 19th Avenue, East Sixth Avenue, and various segments of Powhaton Road due to critical water maintenance. Both directions of Jewell Avenue will see interruptions through September 11, and Montview Boulevard will face closures through March 13. Ongoing through the end of December, Northbound Peoria Street and the northbound Sable Boulevard will also see substantial changes to traffic patterns.
Moreover, large-scale projects have led to significant long-term closures like both directions of 56th Avenue between Monaghan and Hudson roads, which will remain closed until spring 2026 to address extensive road damage. Residents are encouraged to follow detours and advised to regularly check updates as schedules are subject to change without notice.
Amidst the display of construction orange, the city also pours its attention into the East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Aurora has teamed up with Denver, RTD, CDOT, and DRCOG to advance this mass transit project, which promises to expedite travel time from Union Station to RTD’s R-Line Station at I-225. With the project gradually extending to Aurora in late 2025, local businesses on Colfax can access a range of resources through the Aurora South Metro Small Business Development Center to prepare for the impending work.
