Austin-Bergstrom International Airport reported a 6.21% decline in passenger traffic this September compared to the same month last year, according to recently published figures. The total number of passengers for the month was 1,664,972, with enplanements also seeing a slight decrease at 6.17%.

While the statistics, as detailed by the City of Austin official announcement, indicate a downturn for most airlines, there were a few exceptions. Delta Air Lines enjoyed an increase in passenger numbers by 17.8%. Another notable change was with Frontier Airlines, whose passenger count surged by a remarkable 155.4%. Despite a general slump in traffic, international air cargo experienced a significant jump, escalating by 53.25% compared to last year.

On the cargo front, the airport handled 23,816,183 lbs. in September 2024, denoting a 13.42% uptick from September 2023. The report highlights that Air Transport International carried the majority of the weight with 7,142,536 lbs., showcasing a 54.8% increase. However, not all cargo carriers saw gains. Federal Express, for instance, dipped by 21.3%.

Looking at the broader picture from January through September 2024, passenger traffic was almost steady, with only a slight 0.55% decrease in comparison to the same period the previous year. Delta Air Lines and Frontier Airlines bucked the trend with 21.8% and 81.8% rises respectively. In contrast, for this period, Aircraft Operations for General Aviation, painted a different picture, being down by 9.88%.

Overall, the Austin airport's mixed performance reflects the continually changing dynamics of air travel and cargo movement. Each airline's numbers give a snapshot of industry trends, customer preferences, and perhaps the broader economic conditions at play. As the final quarter of the year progresses, stakeholders will be watching to see if these trends hold or if the industry experiences a turnaround.
