Austin Police have publicly identified the pedestrian who lost his life in a disturbing hit-and-run incident that occurred in late August. CBS Austin reports that the victim was Michael Schoenherr, a 38-year-old man whose life was tragically cut short in the 700 block of East Ben White Boulevard westbound service road, near a Murphy's gas station, in the wee hours of the morning.
The CBS Austin article mentions that the Austin Police Department announced Schoenherr was struck at approximately 1:04 a.m. on August 27. Adding to an already sombre situation, the vehicle involved in the incident didn't stop to render aid or report the accident, instead choosing the path of flight, and leaving Michael in its wake.
The case has not seen resolution, as the suspect remains at large. The investigation, led by the APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit, has now turned towards the public for assistance. They seek any information that could lead to the identification of the suspect vehicle. MSN relay the same contact details for tips: the Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111 or the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or 512-472-8477.
An incentive for those who might waver on coming forward, a cash reward of up to $1,000 has been offered for information that significantly aids the pursuit of justice and leads to an arrest. It is a small token when placed on the scale against the balance of a life lost and a perpetrator not yet held accountable, yet it is a means to an end – perhaps the thread that unravels the callous anonymity of hit-and-run culprits.
